Malta Information Technology
Agency (MITA) is the main
ICT agency for the Government
of Malta.
Basically, it is the extended
arm for ICT projects.
All ministries use these
services that MITA offer.
We have been driving
the government policies
for more than thirty years.
The Government of Malta had
a long-term vision to digitize
the Public Service Administration.
Following the Government of
Malta vision, MITA started
the implementation of the
government modern
workplace project.
Ministries and departments
were using different platforms
and applications.
There was a lack of consistency
across the departments.
Our objectives were
mainly two-fold.
First, we wanted to increase
collaboration between
the public sector services
and the departments.
And secondly, we wanted to reduce
the internal bureaucracy.
We needed to make sure that
the platform would match
government security standards.
Before the security concerns
government officials had limited
access to documents and
data while working remotely.
When we launched the modern
workplace project, we wanted
to use tools that users
were already familiar with.
It was one of the main drivers
to use Microsoft 365
productivity tools and install
online services like
Microsoft Teams, OneDrive for
business and SharePoint online.
There are around twenty-three
thousand employees
currently working on the modern
workplace initiative,
their main collaboration tool
is Microsoft Teams,
we have enabled a number of
team sites for the employees,
where they can effectively
collaborate in a secure manner
from any device and
any location.
Our employees are now managing
to save around thirty minutes a day
by adopting these new work
practices, they are now able
to focus on deadlines providing
better service to the citizens.
One of MITA’s main roles is
supporting the Department of Health
during this time of the pandemic.
There was a lot of pressure on
the primary healthcare function,
and MITA provided Microsoft Teams
so that doctors could easily
reach their patients through
the telemedicine initiative
and make sure that all
citizens remain safe.
With the help of Microsoft,
we are elevating the Public
Service Administration towards
the next level of excellence.
